We all know the heartbreak and detestation of losing a pet, whether it is euthanasia or a gentle passing, or suddenly through accident or injury.
Not everyone accepts the grief and loss, some folk dismiss it as 'its only an animal' - or class us as crackpots. We have all been there.
However our animal companions are so much part of our lives, partly because of their dependence on us, partly due to what they give us - its a combination of so many things.
We have all had the insensitive folk, at work or5 whatever, dismissing our tears and grief as trivial, silly and over-reacting. But the hyeartache is real, real as anything else we will ever feel.
I felt we need a thread whereby we can soundboard our experiences, good and bad, on this topic, maybe it might help, just a bit?

If you ask me there should be days off allowed for people that work when they loose a furbaby. They are completely a part of your family.People that don't have furbabies just don't understand that bond you have with them.It is totally heartbreaking when you loose one.I lost my Prissy 9yrs ago come March, and my Peanut 2yrs ago this past Aug.,and it is still like it was yesterday. You never forget and you never stop loving them, they are forever in your heart, just like any other family member. And they should never be taken for granted, they too have feelings and love us unconditionally,as we should them.By the way I am new here my name is Sherree, nice to meet ya'll. :)

RE: Pets are family members too
i agree our pets are our family and we should be given time off work and allow to grieve like we would for family i lost two yorkies and the feeling is loss of your very best friend.i believe that someday we will all be together again.they wont forget us like we will never forget them.
RE: Pets are family members too
i agree too, our pets are just like a family member, and its just as hard when wer lose them as it is to lose a human family member. I was at college when i found out about my Jack being run over by a car, my sister texted me and i was really upset, i walked out of class halfway thru a lesson and i got in trouble for it, my tutor said that my education is much more important than a silly cat! i was really upset and went home... i put in a complaint about what she said and i got a little 'sorry about what i said the other day' but she didnt mean it...
but at least we can come on here and talk to people who feel the same way as us,

My goldfish died on Tuesday and even though it's not the same as a cat, dog etc, his death really upset me. I had him for nearly 12 years and he and all my pets are part of my family.

Yes I agree The space that pets leave are the same as the space a human leaves even if it is on a smaller scale but it is still a space and sometimes it takes some filling. There are both pets and people who appear to be larger than life and just make you smile it doesn't matter if they are here for long or not these are the ones you always seem to remember because they still make you smile at the thoughts of them or their antics. RE: Pets are family members too
In alot of ways, pets can be even closer to us than our human friends and family. They seem to know us better, they accept us for who we are and their love is unconditional - very unlike many humans I've known! I had to have my cat Dipsy put to sleep a couple of weeks ago and its left a huge empty dark hole in my life. I cry almost everyday, my house no longer feels like a home and it hurts real bad everytime I walk in and Dipsy is no longer there to greet me and make me smile. The loss of a pet is definately on the same level as losing a human and people who pass them off as "just an animal" have obviously never opened their hearts fully and enjoyed such companionship and I feel rather sorry for them!
RE: Pets are family members too
I always saw my dog Sadie as my baby and i am finding it extreamly difficult to cope without her i know it has only been a day and it will get better in time but at the moment it is very hard especially when people don't understand xx
