I lost my beloved dog Max yesterday. He was nearly 12 years old and had arthritis which was controlled with Metacam but for the last 2 days he was struggling to walk, nothing could be done so we had to have him put to sleep. That dog was my life, I felt as if he understood me and I understood him. I really miss him and don't know how to cope with the pain!
RE: How to cope with the pain
Hi Carol we had exactly the same with our dog. For 2 days and nights before he died he was crying because his legs hurt him so much he couldnt lay down and when he did he couldnt get up again. He was 13 yrs old and we made the difficult decision to have him put to sleep. It broke my heart so I know exactly how you feel love Angela
RE: How to cope with the pain
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

RE: How to cope with the pain
Dear Carol - it must be awful for you not having Max around - our pets are such a comfort. But he's free from pain now and running around in heaven. I know that animals go there, as I went to see a medium and she told me that my Rachel was surrounded by dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and all kinds. Rachel loved animals and always said she was going to live on a farm and have loads of pets when she was older, so she got her wish, if not in the way I would have liked.
Thinking of you, love Sue x

Thank you all so much for all your kind words, it is all very comforting xx
RE: How to cope with the pain
I cant advice anyone on how to cope, it is one of the most painful things I have gone through. Sam had arthritis in his shoulders and a condition that his brain no longer told his back legs what to do. He was a remarkable dog, he never cried and I felt that was because he didnt want to worry us. His walking got worse but in the end his breathing became difficult for him and he gave me a look that said he'd has enough. It was the hardest decision ever but at least we can do that for them, I look after the elderly and their families tell me they wish they could put them out of their suffering. We miss him so much as you do your Max, its the end of an era of our lives. Take care, lots of love and hugs. xxx
RE: How to cope with the pain
Hello Carol
So sorry to hear of your loss xx
I find at times when the pain becomes just a touch too much, it helps to write down exactly how you are feeling at that moment in time. Just write, and write, and write, and I promise you in time it will help you to feel a whole lot better... and the next time it becomes too much? Do it all over again Ü
I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.
Take Care my love

RE: How to cope with the pain
Hi,
I lost my puppy on Sunday - we had him for just 48 hours before he became poorly and passed away 5 days later. I understand your grief, please try and remember the good times!
